Construction - Editing

To day i began to edit my footage using After Efects CS5, I stabilised by footage of the car driving down the road and then used colour correction. I had a few problems stabalising because my footage was so shacky. So i had to track my footage a few times and scale up.

Construction - Converting video files

Today i imported all my footage onto the Apple Mac. I then used Toast Titanium to convert my footage into HDV (High Definition Video) .mov (Quicktime) so that it is compatible with the Apple programs I will use for editing such as Final Cut Pro, After Effects CS5 and Motion. Once the conversion is complete i will then copy all my footage onto the brain (External Hard Drive) so that there is no way I can lose my footage. I will then wipe the footage from the camera so it is ready for the next time someone uses it to film. I also signed out a video mic for this week so i can record Terry's monologue.

Example Of Release Form

Here is one of the 5 Release forms that i got each of my actors to sign, just like they would have to do if this was a real film. This form covers the director of being sued if one of the actors attempts to make a case saying they do not want to be in the film.

Construction - Filming Complete

Finaly!! :-D
On saturday the 4th of december i filmed all my footage that i would need for my project. I arrived down at the 5mile road and meet the other actors at Le Braye car park at 2.00pm. Here we relised that there was a probelm that there was alot of people around and this would not be idea for my film and also as we were using replicar guns we might have trouble if the police were called, so we drove up the roade and found a car park that was empty and very well hidden. Terry brought down his work collegues and so alltogether i had 5 Actors. One of them brought his Audi Q7 and so this is the car i used for the majority of my filming. I took a few takes with the Camera on the hourse shoe grip filming outside the car window as we drove, this gave me shacky footage however i will use after effects to correct this. Then i fillmed the rest of my footage needed. The weather conditions were far from idea for filming outside and there was waterdroplets on the lense of the camera during filming whitch is not idea, but due to the restrictions of time i have left i will have to ,ake do with what i have got. We finished filming at around 3.30 and i got the ladds to sign the release forms and thanked them for there help.
Audi Q7 That i used.

I have also printed off my release forms.

Construction - Test footage

Because of the unfortunate road conditions on Saturday i was unable to do my filming, so i was kinda stuck on what to do this week. So what i will do is film some test footage of the outside, and yous that to practice using colour correction. If i find a colour i really like i will document how i made it so that i can easily apply it to my real film next week.

Construction - ahhh disaster!!!

Today was the date i srt for filming, however as all my actors are firemen and they were on call today, due to the icyconditions there have been some crashes and so my actors have been drafted in for extra help. This means i have had to prospone filming to next saturday :-|. This will only give me a week and a haf to edit my film before the first draft deadline. Although this is not ideal i am sure ill be able to get it all completed by the deadline as i can go in during lunches and a few days after school. It will get done on time however it will be a push for me....

Construction - Title

Today i continued making my credits with After Effect 5. I downloaded a font of dafonts.com to use, the font was called distorted and scratchy, i chose this font because it looks bold and goes along with my theme of my film. I then created my main title (The name of the film) using an application called motion. This allowed me to use the same font however i also added a foggy effect that i put beneth the title, this means the fog will flow beneth this title. When this had been finished i had created a very classy looking Title that i will use in my project.

Music Video Exercise

On Tuesday, October 12, 2010 we began our music video exercise, were we watched the tenacious d video of the song tribute. In a group of 3 we then attempted to remake the first minuet of the music video. The reason why we did this is because it shows us the importance of camera angles in the video which will help us when we come to do our film. We would also be editing the video using Final Cut Pro and so this exercise is good for learning the basics. So when i come to edit my real product i will not be learning from scratch.

Planning

Today i finished my first draft of my story board. This includes all the shots i need to film for the the first two minuets of my film. I have done this so that on my day of filming i get all the footage i need so that there is no need for a re shoot. I have worked out all the sounds and lighting i need on the draft storyboard. There is a few more shoots that i have added to my project that are not in my treatment sheet.  I will now create the real storyboard. I better be of to do it now....

Treatment Sheet

This is the treatment sheet that i have made for the project. Here i have brefly described the camera angle and also what can be heared during the frame. This helps me as it makes me think about all the props that i am going to need to get hold of, also starting to think about efects and sound effects. This is the stage before a more detailed plan by drawing a story bord.

Planning - Lesson 1

Today was the start of the beginning stage of my planning stage of my project. I started by telling the rest of my class my initial idea. The idea that i told the rest of the class was about a gang doing a drug deal, there is a new gang member and this would be his first job. We would see the gang driving to the meet point and see this new gang member getting increasingly more anxious about the deal. Then this new guy would have a vision of the deal going wrong, the final scene that will be seen is the deal just about to happen before it goes wrong like in the vision. I told the class of a few ideas about camera angles that i wanted to use such as an extreme close up of the new gang member holding a gun, him shacking, also i told them about how i wanted to film from out side the car and have the camera strapped to the front bumper.
The the rest of my class told me what they thought about it, the majority of the class liked my idea. They suggested that i thought about music to go along with the scene or maybe even having a monologue. They also highlighted how important it was that i picked actor who 'looked the part'. This also made me start to think about the props i would need. To make this idea work i would need to find 2black sedans such as a BMW's or Mercedes.
This is my first idea and i am still open to change my idea if i feel i cannot make this idea work effectively.

Research - The Final Destination

.
Analysis of the beginning of The Final Destination:
  • Straight away as the title comes onto the screen there is a blood splatter to the audience, as this film is meant to be in 3D 00.01
  • At 00.05 the camera falls down with a man who has just fallen of a ladder and is had the whiteness turned up to give it that effect.
  • 00.06 is a pov of the ladder about to hit someone in the eye, but it looks like its ganna hit the audience so that makes it scary as it looks real.
  • 00.07 we see match on action as the frame before we see the ladder drop then we see it go through this guys eye.
  • 00.09 we see the ladder and it turns into a metal pole, the viewer is unsure what this pole is for.
  • At 00.11 we see the director showing of his effects when the pole goes through glass and we see it shatter into thousands of pieces.
  • 00.19 wee see into a human body that has had its ribs broken this continues the there of horror and gore as this film is about people dieing in many different and horrible ways.
  • The spinning rib bone then turns into a car and shows the viewer another way how someone has died.
  • As the titles continue the viewer becomes away that actually what he is watching is the deaths of all the other characters who have died in the earlier films and there is even some footage mixed up with the special effects.
  • The last title is being smashed up by a bus, the viewer doesn't know this yet but the last person to die in this film is hit by a bus and so he director is hinting right at the start of the film how it ends.

Research - Blade

Analysis of the opening of the film blade:
  • The titles in red block capitals, this surgestes blood.
  • The background to the titles is a nightclub, this surgests a dark bussy place.
  • The camera focuses mostly on this red headed girl who walks in this surgests that she is a main charicter, such as the scene at 00.18.
  • The lighting has been made to look very dark, this is because of two reasons, first because its ment to look like a night club and second because its a horror film and so its ment to look dark to give the feel of a horror genere.
  • The red paint that comes out of the sprinkerlers surgests blood as this film is based around vampires.
  • At 02.26 the charicter is sourunded and this secene is ment to look very clostrophobic and we can feel thst he is scared.
  • The fast camera angle switches between 02.34 and 02.54 are to show the viewer that he is looking round very fast and is getting agitated.

Research - Run, Fat Boy, Run

Analysis of the opening scene to Run, Fat Boy, Run:
  • At 00.46 the camera pans down on a building with lots of people outside and a car with wedding ribbon on it. This shows the viewer that straight away the film begins is about a wedding and the idea of love.
  • 00.50 we see children chasing each other round a tree and the camera pans across the tree, this shows that this occasion is a happy one and that everybody is enjoying themselves.
  • The frames were the camera pans across the roses and the wedding cake to revile the bride making the final touches, we can see that she is very Happy and this gives the viewers the feeling that the weeding is going smoothly.
  • At 01.33 we see the camera is in a close up and lowers to empathises that the bride is pregnant, this gives the viewers more information. That she got pregnant before the wedding.
  • At 01.49 we see an extreme close up of the grooms face, he does not look as good as the bride, he looks stressed and worried, this suggests to the audience that he is having second thoughts about the wedding.
  • 02.27 adds comedy to this film as so far it has been very serious, the film is a comedy and so this scene is the first look chance we see comedy.
  • When the camera pans away from the door at 02.32 this shows that the groom is very stressed and gives the sensation that everything is getting on top of him.
  • 02.35 - 02.45 shows that the groom is having a panic attack as the camera keeps moving angle and everything look like its coming for him, also the audio has been distorted a little.
  • When the camera angle is showing the window at 02.411 this shows the audience that he is thinking off jumping from the window and doing a runner.

Research - Survey Results (Charts)

Here are my results for the survey i created:

Research - Spider-Man

Analysis of the opening scene of Spider-Man:

  • At 00.01 what the viewer see's is meant to be very ambiguous and so the viewer does not know what their looking at, it makes them try and think what it could be.
  • 00.05 shows the first title in a white font this has a red shadow to it, this suggests spider man as the suit that spider man wares is red.

  • At 00.08 we see what looks like a big metal bar smash the title out of the way, this could represent force against spider man or even a violence in the film.
  • At 00.11 it becomes clear what the shapes were earlier, they were webs from a spiders web and so we can see how this relates to the film.

  • 00.24 we see the background colour change from blue to black however the spiderwebs are still there this could suggest a battle in spider man himself between good and evil.
  • The fact that the whole opening sequence is animated shows were the story comes from out of a graphic novel and put into a film so the credits are made to look like something out of the graphic novel.
  • As the spiders web continues to twist and turn through the titles it comes two a green figure of a head at 01.28 this green figure is the super villain of the film.
  • The spiders web finally gets to a view looking down onto sky scrapers, this suggests that the film will be based in this city.
  • At 02.03 the camera seems to fly through this city much like spider man would when he is using his webs to swing from building to building.

Research - The Hangover

Please press link below for the video as due to copy rights i was unable to embed
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKtHA8EFgIo

Analysis of the opening scene of The Hangover:
  • At 00.23 we see a shot of a flouriest van, this is giving the impression that this film is based around a wedding that is going to happen as the viewer is being shown the wedding preparations.
  • The title's that appear between 00.26 - 00.52 are in white stylish letters, again this helps the viewer to relies that the film is based around a wedding as white is the wedding colour and the writing looks very wedding like.
  • At 00.35 we see the cam pan past a wedding cake, this is continuing to build up the views knowledge of the situation, and in the back ground you can here a telephone ringing tone suggestion that someone is trying to get contacted but is not answering the phone.
  • 00.56 the camera is pointing out of a window and the outside is in focus, this is suggesting that the viewer should be looking out for someone, waiting for someone.
  • The camera then moves to outside the window looking and we see a woman looking out, it is a close up shot of her face this shows that the frame before was actually a pov of her looking out the window and this shows the that she is anxious and worried, again hinting to the viewer that someone is late for the wedding.
  • At 01.16 the camera angle is a long shot, this allows the viewers to listen and watch whats going on but not get to involved. This allows them to just here whats going on without making any judgements on the characters.
  • 01.37 we see the groom finally answer his phone and he looks in a rough way, bleeding lip, and we can see a group of guys in the background with a broken down car, this is been made especially so the viewers have no idea what has happened, so they are in the same situation as the bride is as they have no idea whats going on.
  • 01.47 in the back ground we can see one of the guys taking a wee at the side of the road, this is to add comedy to the film as the film is a comedy and so far in the film there hasn't been any until this moment.
  • The title of the film appears at 02.03 and has been cleverly done too look like the groom looks up at the sky to see the title of the film 'The Hangover'
  • Between 02.06 - 03.35 all the titles play with bold white lettering, this contrasts the titles that were on during the wedding frames, also the titles are infront of backgrounds of a road trip this suggests how far away they are from were they need to be.

Research - Saving Private Ryan

.
Analysis of the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan:
  • At 00.00 we see the quiet beach. This beach is fortified which suggests to the audience that there is going to be a attack soon.
  • Between 00.07 and 00.12 the date and were the beach is comes up on the bottom of the film, this is to inform the viewer and so that they can see its set during World War Two and what they are about to witness is one of the many landings that took place during D-Day.
  • At 0.18 - 0.24 the camera bounces up and down, this is done to try and give the audience the sensation of being on one of the landing crafts in the choppy shore, this is to try and make it more realistic so that the audience can get a feel for what it must have been like on the approach to the beach.
  • 00.25 the viewer sees an extreme close up of a soldiers hand shacking, this is because the director wants to show the viewer how scared the solider must have been and so this close up of the shaking hand does this very effectively. Also it shows that they could just be cold and shivering.
  • 00.31 - 00.55 Starts with a extreme close up of this solider and then it pans out down the center of the landing craft from this solider, this shows the audience that this solider is very important in the film and may even be one of the main characters. This is also good camera work as it allows the viewers to see all the different reactions to what is going on by the other soldiers such as being sick or shacking ect.
  • The camera angle from the landing craft looking onto the beach at 01.54 shows the audience how as soon as the landing door was lowered all the men got shot to pieces, those also shows what a solider would have seen and how as he looked up the beach all he would be able to see is smoke this smoky effect also symbolises the unknown and how the soldiers did not know what they were walking into.
  • The camera angle behind the Germans soldier's at 02.02 shows the audience the wide scale destruction on the beaches. It also helps the viewer to sympathies for the soldiers who are latterly walking to their deaths.
  • At 02.45 the camera goes in the water then out, this is a pov shot making the viewer believe that they are trying to drag themselves onto shore with bullets flying past them and bombs going off all around.
  • During the frames of 04.17 the camera shakes, this is go give the effect of the power of the mounted machine gun that the recoil is creating vibrations, it gives a sense of the power of the gun.
  • Between 04.38 - 05.34 the audio goes rely quiet this is for a few reasons such as it shows that the solider has been stunned and deafened by the noise of explosions and gun fire. This sielence also makes the viewer concentrate on what they are viewing which is lots of suffering and death, this quiet scene makes the viewer reflect on all the pain rather than the actction of war.

Research - Harry Brown

Analysis of the opening scene of Harry Brown:
  • The black background and small white titles does not add much to the film, it does not give the audience any idea about what the film is about or even what might be in the film. The audience is kept in suspense to see what might happen in this film.
  • At about 00.09 as the titles we start to here faint talking from what sounds like a young man, this gets louder and louder until finally the film begins and we are able to see a group of young lads in a underpass at 00.15. This audio during the titles is used to start to set the scene for the viewer, even before the viewer can see the action.
  • 00.16 The shot is done on a hand held camera, this makes this scene a pov shot and makes the audience feel like they are rely there, the people moving around in front of the camera makes it look like the viewer is part of the crowed.
  • At 00.18 the camera is right up against the wall and all we can see is the character surrounded by walls and people, this is very claustrophobic and so gives the audience a sense that the character is being pressured into something and has nowhere to run.
  • The director has created a very smokey atmosphere at 00.45 this is to show the audience that they do drugs and smoke down there as the air does not look very clean, you also see the character exhale which shows that he is doing drugs.
  • At 00.55 we see the camera quickly get into focus on the gun. This is done so it looks like the guy quickly points the gun at the audiences face. The camera focuses because it looks like when the human eye has to quickly adjust when something is suddenly up close, and so this creates the sensation that the gun has just been pointed in the viewers face.
  • The sudden stop of action at 01.13 is done because this is were the clip ends and the next scene is a while latter and so the title is played to break up the film and to show time passing without having to say it on the film.
  • The rest of the opening again is filmed on a handheld camera as a pov shot so the audience believes they are there in the action, in this case it is made to look like the viewer is riding a motorbike.
  • The camera looks down at the wheel of the motorbike at 01.20 this is done so that all the viewers know that this is a motorbike that is being ridden as you could only tell this before by the audio of the motorbike engine.
  • The whole scene were the motorbike is driving is done with very quick frames of lots of different camera angles, this is done to give the impression that the motorbike is driving excessively fast.
  • Between 01.47 and 01.57 the audio is muffled, this is because the director is trying too make the viewer believe that that gun rely fired and that the bang has deafened them slightly.
  • At 02.06 to 02.11 we see the camera slide across the road, this is showing that the rider of the bike gets knocked of the bike with some force to send him sliding all the way  across the road.
  • At 02.11 the camera is settled on the ground facing the crash scene, this shows the audience the scale of the crash as you can see the bike in pieces all over the place.

Research - The fast and the furious

.
Analysis of the opening of The fast and the furious
  • 00.28 we see the title of the film start to emerge and how its opaque so we can see the film behind it, the title is very big and bold and suggests that this film will be fast packed with lots of action.
  • The camera pans out at 00.47 this shows the viewer the size of the Lorry and the load its carrying.
  • At 01.26 we see the camera pan out again this time it suggests that the lorry is being followed by the cars with green neon.
  • Throughout the opening the frames are very quick and so this gives the sense of speed danger and action!!
  • Between 01.40 and 01.43 we see match on action being used, this shows the audience clearly what is going on in many different angles at the same time.
  • The extreme close up at 01.58 shows the viewer exactly what the guy is doing as this is a very complex series of events this needs to be clearly shown so that the viewers are aware of whats going on.

Research - The Ring

.
Analysis of the beginning of the film The Ring:
  • At 00.02 we see the camera angle had allowed the viewer to see that the TV set has turned on and is static as the viewer is able to see the reflection in the window. This makes it scary for the viewer because as far as they are concerned there is only her in the house and there was no reflection in the window.
  • 00.11 is an extreme close up of the girls face and this lets the audience sympathise for her, almost feel her being scared. This allows the viewer to be very involved with the plot rather than distanced.
  • The frames at 00.15 are a pov shot and makes the film feel very scary and real as the director is asking you to see through the eyes of the girl, this is very scary as the audience is unaware of what is round the corner. The camera pans very slowly and so this builds the tension up.
  • At 00.38 we see a shot of her walking of and the TV turning back on again, the director cleverly uses reflection in the glass show the TV turning back on again, this repetition even in the intro shows that this Will be a recurring event through out the film, a warning of something bad about to happen.
  • When the camera zooms in on the girl at 00.50 this symbolises that fear is getting closer to her almost taking over her as you can see through the actors acting that she is very scared at this point.
  • 01.01 we see a close up of both the girl and the TV this shows the audience the girls desperation to work out what is going on, as you see in her facial expressions.
  • At 01.08 the camera does a quick pan after we see the girl quickly look behind her trying to find a figure, this quick pan puts the viewer in the room next to the girl, as she looks back the viewer looks back this is very scary as the viewer is put in the terrifying situation that the character is in and so adds to the genre of it being a horror film.
  • 01.33 the rule of thirds is being obeyed, but this also creates a scary element as the viewer is allowed to look down the dark eory looking corridor and it allows the views emagination to run wild as they think of what could be lurking in the dark.
  • The sudden frame at 01.41 were the girl turns and suddenly the background is in focus shows the audience that the girl suddenly looks down the corridor that something scary may be down there or something made her worried what maybe down there.
  • Throughout the film opening colour adjustments have been done to the film, these have made the film feel very cold with blue colours and darker colours. This makes the feel feel wintry and scary.

Research - S.W.A.T

Analysis of the opening scene to S.W.A.T
  • Between 00.33-00.44 we see the titles some up in a bold blue font. This suggests police as blue is the police lights colour. Also as the titles come up there is the sound of a police woman across the radio and police lights flashing on the screen which make the word 'swat' this shows the viewer that this film is about the police and especially the branch 'swat'.
  • From 00.47 - 00.50 the camera pans up over the Hollywood sign to show a group of helicopters flying over Hollywood. This camera shot not only shows were the film is based but also shows the scale of the event that is unfolding as we can see five helicopters flying of in the distance.
  • The camera work between 00.51-01.01 is very shaky and poor quality with lots of zooms in and out. This has been done to make it seem like your actually there witnessing this event, a film reporter or just a bystander with a hand held camera. This puts the viewer right into the action from the moment the film begins.
  • 01.02 shows a shot of a helicopter in flight over the action scene with a search camera on the front. Then the camera shot flicks to a car were two men are shooting from at 01.04. This gives the impression that that helicopter was filming or looking at these guys as this technique makes the viewer think that we are looking from the helicopters point of view.
  • 01.04 to 01.06 is an example of match on action because we see the man firring the AK47 and then the next frame is looking at the police car and we see the bullets from the gun hit the windscreen of the car.
  • At 01.12 the camera is pointing at a man firring a gun. The shot is a medium close up and is from the ground looking up at him. This shows this character to be powerful and giving the impression that he is winning the fire fight.
  • At 01.20 the director is obeying the rule of thirds. What is also interesting about this frame is that it is an extreme close up of the character, this frame gives the impression that he is very aggressive and 'in your face'. It is as if he is shouting the commands at the viewer.
  • The quick camera movement between 01:22 and 01.26 gives the impression of action and danger to the viewer.
  • At 01.36 the camera angle is high above the SWAT truck, this camera angle gives the viewer a view of the word 'swat' on the top of the truck, this shows that swat is the main theme in the film.
  • At 01.37 the music of the film starts to kick in when we see the SWAT team kit up in a helicopter this suggests to the viewer that these are the heroes of the film and that they are there to kick ass!!

Research - Branchage Film Festival

On the 23rd of September I vised the Spiegeltent where the branchage film festival was being held. Here we heard a talk by the director of the well know urban drama called Kidulthood. The director’s name is Menhaj Heda, he showed us a short film that he had made before he directed Kidulthood called 'Jump Boy'. Jump Boy is a urban drama about a group of boys of about 16years old. Menhaj briefly described how and why he decided to make Jump Boy. After this he then showed us some scenes from Kidulthood, which he then talked about how he filmed it and all the problems he faced such as filming one scene on different days like the scene out side the school were the main character is talking in the car. He was also telling us about his song choice for one of the scenes, ’Just a rascal by Dizzee Rascal' , and how that scene almost becomes a music video as the actions are always choreographed to the music. Before Menhaj had worked on film he had done alot of work for channel 4 music show and so had done alot of work on music videos. This experience was inspirational and made me think about how i was going to make my project.

Research - The grudge

Analysis of the opening of The Grudge:
  • The music that acompanies the titles is slow and high pitched which gives the sence of spookyness. As the opening gets on it gets slowly increasingly faster and louder.
  • From 00.56 - 01.05 there is a quota that is designed to scare the viewer and also to give the view a idea of what might come. It helps to build up anticipation about what happend and why some one died with a grudge.
  • The titles are in a spookylooking font and so add to the horror genre. The black background and white letters also adds to this effect that the director is trying to give.
  • At 01.02 the quote goes only leaving the word fury, this surgests that this word fury is a key theme in this film. It also turns red which symbolyses blood and death.
  • At the frame 01.08 we see the camera pan over a city in japan, then to the sholder of a man. The city seems quiet and dull. Although the sky seems clear there is verylittle light and so it looks like it is a cloder mounth of the year and so adds to the spooky eiry look of the film.
  • The rule of thirds is being aplyed at 01.23
  • At 01.33 we get a midum cloes up of the side of his head, this brings the viewer cloeser to him as can see his facial expressions and how pail he is. This shows the viewer that there is something wrong with him but before the viewer is able to think too long we see him letting himslef just drop of the balcony.
  • When he drops of the balcony the camera is over the wife's sholder this makes the viewer take an emotional step back from the man and lets them feel the shock and horror that the wife must be feeling seeing him just drop.
  • 01.49 - 01.50 is a pov of the man droppingto his death, this is quiet a shocking veiw as it puts the viewer in his eyes and you can see yourself falling to your death. This is an example of the shock and horror which continues throught the film and so this gives the viewer a taster of whats to come.
  • At 01.58 the camera slowly drops down the building and from the bottom loos up, this gives the audience an idea of how high the man has droped and makes everyone wonder what could have caused him to let himslef drop to his death.

Research - Zombieland

Analysis of the intro to the film Zombieland:
  • At 00.03 the image of a American flag shows up in focus and behind it is very out of focus, this looks like a normal american flag but the background you cant see and so the viewer is not aware of anything diferent about the film so far.
  • As the back ground comes into focus the viewer then relises that the flag and camera are upsidown and so the viewer is made to ask him/herself why?
  • At 00.15 the camera is turned the right way round again and pans out a little, this gives the impression that its a handheld camera and that it has just been picked up.
  • The next few frames shows the handheld camera pan right and show the area, the camera shake also ads to the feel that it is a amature vidieo. This is a POV shot and the audence is asked to 'be the person holding the camera'.
  • The camera is made to be looking around to give a sence of danger and that the person holding the camrea is scared.
  • When the zombie jumps out it looks like it is attacking the viewer and so makes this frame scary for the viewer.
  • At 00.21 we see a gun on the floor this is important as it surgests that there will be action latter in the film also that there was people who may have been atacked recently in the area.
  • The zombie burping at the end is very important to this film as the fast 40 seconds has been about action and horror, this comic moment helps to bring back the audience as this film is a comidy horror.

Research - The Hurt Locker

.
Analysis of the opening scene of The Hurt Locker

  • Between 00.00 and 00.08 the quote 'The rush of battle is often a petent and lethal adiction, for war is a drug'. This immediately gets the viewer of the film to think about what it would be like to actully be a soilder and how being a soilder would effect you mentaly.
  • At 00.9 the quote fades away leaving only 'war is a drug', this gives the viewer an insight as to what might happen in the film. That mayby a soilder fights and the fighting becomes a part of him (simmilarly to a drug addiction) and so he does not want to stop almost like the war is the persons life.
  • 00.15 is a pov shot of what looks like a military robot, however the viewer can only see the ground that the robot is filming and so the viewers are kept in suspense which is why this shot was used.
  • Through out the opening scene when we are not in the pov of the robot the filming is very shaky, this has been done on purpose as it is made to look like amature filming mayby a doctumentary of some sort, it even makes it feel more relistic to the viewers as it is much more like they are there in the action.
  • Also throughout the opening scene the camera does various zooms both in and out, again this is to try and give the impression of amature filming such as a documentary.
  • The extreme close up shot at 01.38 shows the to the audience that the character is consentrating hard and may also be underpresure. At this frame the director is also obaying the rule of thirds.
  • The camera angle at 01.49 gives the view of what the soilder can see. It is although you are looking at the screen that the soilders are using to control the robot this gives the audience a feeling of how hard and how much presure these soilders are under.
  • The extreem cloes up of one of the soilders eyes at 01.56 and then a long shot of a woman across the street at 01.57 shows that the soilder is looking at her and is looking around the surounding area, this gives the impression of danger as the soilders are constantly on look out.
  • The cutting back and forth of the robot and the soilders shows how the soilder is controlling the robot and so the viewer can see who is controlling the robot all the time.
  • The frames between 04.29 - 04.32 shows how the director has efectivly used match on action.

Research - Equilibrium

Analysis of opening scene scene of equilibrum:
  • At 00.17 of the film we can see the title for the movie as being very plain and just bold letters. The director has used this font as it surgests that there is something very uniformed about this film, as latter we find out that all humans are repressed from their emotions this font surgests this by the dullness. Also the black background and white lettering could represent good conquering evil or even light comming out of darkness.
  • Between 00.28 - 00.53 the director has put vidieos of past events such as the testing of a atom bomb, the destruction after the blits and also vidieo of the russian dictator stalin. The voiceover describes about a third world war and so these two features that this film is baced around civilisation post apocoliptic.
  • At 00.56 we see a view of a figure almost dancing but with two guns in his/her hands. The character is blacked out and you can only see a small bit of this empty room, this surgests that the film is baced around secrecy and the unknown as you cannot trully see the character.
  • A medium cloes up is used of this character is used and has become less blacked out, this is too show the viewer that this man is a human but holding the guns infront of his face keeps the secrecy of him so the viewer is unable to know who he is and is distanced from him.
  • 01:04 we see what looks like a building, however this is unclear. The importance of this building/structure is and so it is very ambiguius and the viewer is not clear as to what purpose this serves and so again this feeling of secrecy and unknown is seen.

  • 01:07 is a medium long shot, this shot was used because it only shows the viewer these figurs getting out of a van and nothing els, again this is too show unknown as the viewer is still unaware of what is going on. Also the characters are all in black this surgest that they are the bad force of the film as they look very black and agressive.
  • Between 01.19 - 01.21 the 180 degree rule is used as we see a camera angle pointing from the painting then from the guy looking at it.

  • 01.19 a medium cloes up is used. This is used to try and help the audience to empthise for him, as it is clear he is thinking of a loved one that may have died. This is the first frame in the film were any human emotion is seen.
  •   At 01.23 we see a room full of men with weponds and full of art work, this surgests that they are going against the law and that they hoarding the artwork.

  • A feeling of fast pact action is created by the frames between 01.22 and 01.24 as the camera angle changes about three times in that short space of time, this gives the impression of danger and that something is going to happen very soon. It also makes the viewer anticpate what will happen next.

  • The frame at 01.37 is a camera pan where the camera drops down to look up at the character, this gives the viewer an impression that this man is standing up for his belifs agains the rulling authorities.
