Research - The Ring

.
Analysis of the beginning of the film The Ring:
  • At 00.02 we see the camera angle had allowed the viewer to see that the TV set has turned on and is static as the viewer is able to see the reflection in the window. This makes it scary for the viewer because as far as they are concerned there is only her in the house and there was no reflection in the window.
  • 00.11 is an extreme close up of the girls face and this lets the audience sympathise for her, almost feel her being scared. This allows the viewer to be very involved with the plot rather than distanced.
  • The frames at 00.15 are a pov shot and makes the film feel very scary and real as the director is asking you to see through the eyes of the girl, this is very scary as the audience is unaware of what is round the corner. The camera pans very slowly and so this builds the tension up.
  • At 00.38 we see a shot of her walking of and the TV turning back on again, the director cleverly uses reflection in the glass show the TV turning back on again, this repetition even in the intro shows that this Will be a recurring event through out the film, a warning of something bad about to happen.
  • When the camera zooms in on the girl at 00.50 this symbolises that fear is getting closer to her almost taking over her as you can see through the actors acting that she is very scared at this point.
  • 01.01 we see a close up of both the girl and the TV this shows the audience the girls desperation to work out what is going on, as you see in her facial expressions.
  • At 01.08 the camera does a quick pan after we see the girl quickly look behind her trying to find a figure, this quick pan puts the viewer in the room next to the girl, as she looks back the viewer looks back this is very scary as the viewer is put in the terrifying situation that the character is in and so adds to the genre of it being a horror film.
  • 01.33 the rule of thirds is being obeyed, but this also creates a scary element as the viewer is allowed to look down the dark eory looking corridor and it allows the views emagination to run wild as they think of what could be lurking in the dark.
  • The sudden frame at 01.41 were the girl turns and suddenly the background is in focus shows the audience that the girl suddenly looks down the corridor that something scary may be down there or something made her worried what maybe down there.
  • Throughout the film opening colour adjustments have been done to the film, these have made the film feel very cold with blue colours and darker colours. This makes the feel feel wintry and scary.
